Spring Has Sprung!

There is absolutely no way I am going to write for an entire year and not write about spring. I’ve covered every other season, so here’s my take on the current one.  As you know, I only love summer. This may be controversial and close minded, so in the interest of making myself a better person, I am opening up to the notion that I can love spring too. Nothing says spring like bunnies for Easter, and tulips sprouting up from newly mulched flower beds. Who doesn’t love bunnies and tulips? But despite all of the seemingly wonderful things about spring, I guess my hang up is that it is just not warm enough. It can look warm and sunny, but some of those spring days can be downright cold. And don’t even get me started about a springtime snow storm- yuck! But this year I am going to dig a little deeper into spring and think about it like many of you: as a time of rebirth.

If you ask Google why we associate spring with rebirth, the answers are many. The ones I gravitate towards relate to nature, because I am a science nerd and I love to read about how the Earth transforms itself from the season of rest and hibernation to the season of growth and rejuvenation. Set me up with a documentary on animal babies emerging for spring and I will be captivated for hours!

During my research on spring and rebirth I stumbled upon a quote that really resonated with me:

“Spring is the season of hope and renewal when, encouraged by the increase of light and warmth, we find the energy to take the necessary action that can push the tentative new beginning into full awakening.” (Sheryl Lisa Paul, Conscious Transitions, March 12, 2012)

I don’t know a lot about this author but I love her choice of words for the description of spring. I love that she uses soft, comforting words like encourage, warmth, tentative and awakening. There’s no stress in this sentence…there’s no pressure to do or act or succeed. It’s a gentle push towards change; how delightful.

In January we make resolutions for the new year and usually by March we have either forgotten about them, or more likely we have been too busy to keep our focus on them. If you’ve kept up- I’m impressed! If not, consider making intentions this spring. An intention is a purposeful way of setting goals for yourself. I’ve included a link at the bottom of this week’s blog about what intentions are, how to set them, and why they could be beneficial to you.

Do you need an awakening or rebirth this spring? I love this idea that we get a second chance during the year to reevaluate our purpose and make the necessary changes to be content, and dare I say even happy, with our lives. Don’t we deserve that? As the weather warms up I am going to head out for a walk and think about my own intentions for the rest of the year. I will appreciate everything about spring: the nature, the newness, and all the possibilities.
